Traditional fishing in Jeju

(Rock gap Fishing)

Gomang (Jeju dialect for “hole”) Fishing uses wooden or

bamboo fishing rods to catch the fish swimming

between the rock formations so common on the coasts of Jeju.

Rockfishes and spotty belly greenling are the most common catches.

Make your own rod from scratch,

collect your bait as they do in the Law of the Jungle, and let it drop.

Rockfishes, spotty belly greenlings, and even octopuses might come up.

Let's take a trip to Jeju local memories together!

"Rock Gap Fishing" is a fishing that catches fish

from a hole of a stone making a fishing pole

with bamboo etc. in the stone island of Jeju Island.

Born and Bred in Jungmun Daepohang Port

My dad’s a fisherman, and my mom’s a haenyeo (women diver),

born and bred in Daepo-dong, Jeju.

I’m a master of rock fishing, hunter of saw-edged perch,

“the tiger of the sea,” and a lazy tangerine farmer producing

low-insecticide tangerines.

I came up with the idea of Gomang Fishing experience

from the memories of my childhood,

when I would do Gomang Fishing with my friends

in the waters in front of Daepohang Port

and roast the catches on the ember.
